Our Kindergarten Mystery Reader program is always full of surprises! Last week, we were thrilled to welcome Shirley, a 47-year veteran teacher from Jamaica and grandmother of a GSB kindergartener. Clad in costume and props, she brought Caps for Sale to life with her animated storytelling. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. . . to come together with friends and family! Our Lower School kicked off our annual Winter Celebrations with a joyful performance featuring beloved classics like “Frosty the Snowman” and songs about togetherness, including “Zussamen.” The night ended on a high note as our choir wrapped up the show with a GSB favorite, “Fruit Salad,” and a heartfelt rendition of “When I Grow Up.” We deeply value the arts as an important part of student growth, and love watching our students grow their confidence each year. . . . #nycschools #nyckids #musicislife #bilingualeducation
Dual Language in Action! Our Middle Schoolers showcased their German reading skills during the Internationaler Vorlesewettbewerb, a read-aloud competition that celebrates literacy and German language fluency. Students read excerpts from their favorite German novels, and our semifinalists impressed the audience with passages from Reise zum Mittelpunkt der Erde / Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne, demonstrating the fluency (and confidence!) they’ve built through GSB’s dual-language approach. Seasonal “Forest Days” are an integral part of our early childhood philosophy - students should have the chance to connect with nature and play outdoors. As we enter the holiday season, our students will be discussing diverse cultural traditions and this week they reflected on the broader context of the “First Thanksgiving’” from multiple historical perspectives. While some classes made turkeys during arts and crafts, others learned about the Wampanoag in order to prepare their traditional dish of Nasamp, and built dioramas showing what they are most grateful for.
