Arel Sinett Educational Assistant
The son of two public school teachers, I was born and raised in sunny South Florida (Boca Raton, to be specific). After a childhood spent going to both Magnet and IB schools, I pursued my undergraduate degree in Communications at Florida Gulf Coast University.
While there, I had the opportunity to work with a number of renowned educators on a system called Integrated Studies, which utilizes and integrates media, technology, and games into the American education system. I played pivotal roles in the development of classes that taught politics and culture through television episodes, civil rights through comic books, and even a class about dystopias taught through the lens of an ENORMOUS, 150 person game of Dungeons & Dragons (that netted students 3 credits by the end of it).
From there, I followed my mentor’s footsteps and got my MA in Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University. Here, I presented at academic conferences on how to best break glass ceilings in media industries, as well as ways to utilize both board and video games in classroom pedagogy. All the while, I was teaching undergrad students communication history, working for a board game accessory company, and running social media for one of Brooklyn’s biggest family entertainment venues!
Out of all the hats I’ve worn, none make me feel quite as happy as the one that I get to wear when I’m teaching! As those 90’s school posters say, learning is fundamental, and I couldn’t be more excited to help the students at Global School Brooklyn have fun while learning.
